DIY Face masks – Covid crafting

DIY Face masks

Currently there are lots of patterns and information floating about for making DIY face masks. I’ve found the following the most helpful:

Things I learned while making my masks:

So far I’ve tried making from a range of materials. I learned the following that may help others

  • African wax cotton fabric (Ankara fabric) is beautiful and easy to work with. Unfortunately I found the finished product much more difficult to breath through than standard quilting cotton. Such a waste of my beautiful Ankara fabric.
  • Be careful with pattern piece placement when cutting out your fabric – especially for the shaped mask. You may unintentionally wind up with something that looks like scary yellow teeth (see creepy image below). If that’s what your aiming for – go for it.

Badly placed pattern pieces can have unintentionally creepy results.

  • The pattern above for the flat accordion style mask appears sized for a standard Western male. If you are making for a standard Western female be prepared to shorten the elastic length.Accordion DIY face mask
